the sun burns

when you’ve convinced yourself

you’re not worthy of its light.

i’m drunk and the lights are out.

is this divine intervention?

a sign from above to stop

me from going too far?

i’m not so egotistical as to believe

there is a divine entity who cares

enough to play the role of overprotective

bartender in my little sob story.

i walk out into the black night and lie

down underneath the big dipper.

i think about both everything and nothing,

and wonder if i deserve any of this—

the stars in the sky, the beauty

of the universe, the air in my lungs.

i decide that if i don’t now,

i will one day.
